My father was Zeus, and my mother was a mortal named Semele. My father's wife Hera, discovered the affair with Semele and appearing as an old crone, Hera befriended Semele, who confided in her that Zeus was actually carrying me in her womb. Hera pretended not to believe her, and planted seeds of doubt in Semele's mind. Curious, Semele demanded of Zeus that he reveal himself in all his glory as proof of being an actual god. Though Zeus begged her not to ask this, she insisted and he agreed. Therefore he came to her wreathed in bolts of lightning. Being a mortal she could look upon an undisguised god without dying, and she burned to a crisp in the light. I was saved by Hermes and my father put me in his thigh and I was born out of him. My father sent me to the nymphs to be raised by them. I was taken into the valley by them. There I learned how to make wine.
